In My Kitchen is a wonderful monthly series hosted by Celia from Fig Jam and Lime Cordial. Head over to her blog for a full list of the participants, and find out what’s happening in kitchens across the globe.
This post finally sees the transition from my cold weather kitchen in wintery Canberra to a touch of spring. In my kitchen this month…
I’ve been baking sourdough regularly again, this week’s pictured below with a loaf of sesame banana bread…
I made Mr GP, who is a big fruitcake fan, a Dundee cake, and also made some apple hand pies with some slightly floury apples…
I showcased the lovely cheap leeks at the markets in a wonderfully rich and warming cock-a-leekie soup….
and roasted an assortment of winter vegetables topped with haloumi…
At the end of the week rush at the markets, I grabbed two bags of passionfruit for $1 each! These were turned into fantastic passionfruit curd using this recipe…
As well as some cute little passionfruit shortbreads…
Strawberries have recently become incredibly cheap as the Queensland season gears up, selling for as little as three punnets for $4, so as well as making salads with the wonderful combination of late season citrus and new season strawberries…
I made a quick batch of strawberry jam with caramelised balsamic and black pepper…
I’ve also bought a few wonderful goodies from my regular online market, Farmhouse Direct, including wonderful fresh corn tortillas from La Tortilleria….
Delicious cheeses from Apostle Whey…
Bananas, banana flour and dried banana slices from Springhaven Meadows…
And beautiful cultured butter, buttermilk and creme fraiche from Myrtleford Butter Factory…
I also have a new cookbook, to encourage Mr GP and me to eat special dinners together a bit more often…
What’s in your kitchen (or garden) this month?
What lovely food! You’ve been busy, especially baking! What do you use banana flour for?

I’m not sure yet, it’s my first batch! I understand though that like coconut flour, it absorbs a lot of liquid, so I’ll probably try substituting a small proportion in a few things and see how I go…

Oh wow! I succumbed to the lure of Apostle Whey Cheeses’ free postage and bought some too. Delicious! The strawberries and blood orange (is it?) salad looks fabulous. The strawberry jam sounds sooo good and needs to be spread on the sourdough bread without delay. Beck, your kitchen is brimming with goodies as usual. Thanks for sharing.

I tasted the Myrtleford butter last year, it’s now my favourite butter. Just recently looked at Farmers Direct but haven’t ordered from them yet. Your bread looks terrific..

Sandra, it’s worth getting the farmhouse direct newsletter as they have free shipping on particular items quite often – that’s when I usually buy…

Your bread looks so professional- great slashing and spring. I fancy everything from our kitchen this month- all lovely stuff. Where do you find the Myrtleford butter?

Thanks very much Francesca! I haven’t really posted about my sourdough as there are so many great experts like Celia who have it covered, but I do enjoy it, and am particularly pleased to get to the stage that it’s now just a regular part of the weekly routine…
Like the other goodies, the butter comes from Farmhouse Direct – in a very cute little esky with icepack – along with some seeds and instructions on how to turn the esky into a planter 🙂

I have leeks in the garden – do you have some interesting leek recipes? The Cock-a-leekie soup looks interesting… and I want to learn how to bake bread like you do. Ever thought of doing some cooking courses for kitchen tragics like me? 🙂

Oh well done on growing leeks! I haven’t had much success with them, but certainly happy to dig out some recipes. The cock-a-leekie is a great Scottish winter meal, and uses about four big leeks, so can give you the details on that.
And happy to give you a bread cooking course any time! – I’ll just have a think about how best to organise the timing, as there isn’t a lot of hands on work, but quite a bit of time in-between 🙂

Bread is gorgeous! That jam has me drooling, doesn’t pepper work well with strawbs? Been meaning to check out Farmhouse Direct for a while. Think now is the time 🙂

Thanks Maree! Yes I also like fresh strawbs with a good grinding of pepper 🙂
Yes, FHD is well worth a look, especially when you’re in Vic, as quite a few of the producers of fresh goods are based there and will only ship locally…

Ooh, I love the sound of your jam – and what a clever idea for a cookbook! I hope Mr GP will be cooking out of it for you, or date night will start to look like most other nights. 😉

Thanks Amanda, I don’t mind cooking for an occasional appreciative audience of one, it’s the daily meals for an unappreciative audience of small fry that are a bit less appealing 🙂

What a colourful contribution! I really like all the different vegetables and fruits you have going on in your kitchen this past month. I am particularly tempted by the winter veg with halloumi!

Thanks Maggie! The veg with halloumi is a variation on a Nigella recipe, and really flexible – just use up whatever’s in the fridge 🙂
