In my kitchen this month is…
…a jar of brandied cumquats waiting to be added to Christmas cakes and puddings in a couple of months,
…blood orange cordial made with the last of my box of Red Belly blood oranges,
…a bowl of limes and grapefruit from my parents sub-tropical garden on the mid-north coast of NSW,
…a box of amazing coloured blood limes (a cross between the native finger lime and a mandarin hybrid) from Pipers Creek Grove at Dondingalong, also on the mid-north coast – I’m still deciding what to do with them,
…a huge jar of honey from friends of my parents,
…and finally, leaving the winter citrus behind, our first case of mangoes of the season! We’re all very excited 🙂
What’s in your kitchen this month?
Oh, like, wow! These goodies all add up don’t they? Fruit of the earth, indeed. But the mangoes, the mangoes! Wherever did you get them? My trees are only just in flower. It will be months before the first fruit. Meanwhile the nectarines are plumping up nicely and I keep fit chasing birds away in frenetic forays, crying “shoo shoo” at the top of my lungs. Just as well we don’t have near neighbours ; )

I’m afraid I can’t say these are local mangoes – all the way from NT – but still very nice, and will only improve 🙂

Hi Beck! I can’t believe Christmas is just around the corner. Hats off to your for starting your prep with those plump glistening cumquats. My my, that IS a huge jar of honey. Pooh bear would be envious!

Thanks Kirsty, I’d like to say I’m really organised, but it’s more that I had to do something with the cumquats while they’re available – which won’t be in December!
The honey is probably about one lunchtime for Pooh, but thankfully it will last us a while 🙂

What a gorgeous colour is the blood orange cordial. I’m sure it will taste just as good as it looks. What a shame blood oranges aren’t available all year. We have just planted a tree.

It’s sort of a shame, though I do like how the few foods that are seasonal these days always seem more special – like cherries!
A blood orange tree sounds great, I’ve thought about whether we could fit in one – how big do they get?

Lucky my mum’s such a great gardener mostly! Though as you’d agree we are very lucky with our produce in general in Australia 🙂

I love all the fresh produce in your kitchen. Love the idea of blood orange cordial. I missed the boat this citrus season. Mostly I covet those blood limes though. I am interested to see what you do with them.

Isn’t it funny, I seem to have been inundated with nothing but citrus for months! It makes a big difference if you have people giving you bags of them for free of course 🙂
I’ll definitely post what I do with the limes, and while I don’t want to tempt you, Pipers creek look like they do still have more available…

Thanks Tandy, they are unusual aren’t they…and a bit easier to use than the original native finger limes as the skin isn’t so strong tasting.

Wonderful IMK post, full of the most delicious produce! I too am intrigued by the blood limes – I have never seen or heard of them! And the giant jar of honey looks sublime. You are rolling into spring as we roll into Autumn – now it will be my turn to sigh over all the marvellous produce that will be showing up in all these IMK posts over the next few months!!

Snap, I’ve just done a jar of spiced brandied cumquats in preparation for Christmas! What are you doing with yours? I have no clue what to use them for, it’s my first time with cumquats. I’m intrigued about your blood limes, I’ve not heard of them before.

I was thinking about dicing them into fruitcake and pudding. I also have some spiced pickled ones that the fabulous Stephanie says are wonderful put inside a roasting chicken or turned into cumquat butter to slice over chicken or fish…

I’ve seen little punnets of them occasionally at some greengrocers, but I got these from Farmhouse Direct online, I’m looking forward to experimenting!

Thanks for joining in! Fabulous homegrown produce, and those limes are intriguing – we have a finger lime tree, but it just won’t fruit! Do your blood limes have the pearls in them like the finger limes do?

They do have the same pearls, and overall the flavour and appearance is very similar to the finger lime but without the rather unpleasant bitter flavour in the skin – in the blood lime the skin is quite mild tasting, so I’m going to try using the whole lime in a few things and report back…

Oh you’re organised! It’s on my list, but haven’t got there yet…usually I get together with a few friends each Nov and we mix up a huge batch together and each take a cake home. Our record is 17kg of cake mixture 🙂
